As part of the Unruly Spaces: Public Space, Society and Politics in Urban Africa project, this workshop marked the conclusion of the Kinshasa research phase. Held on June 12, 2025, at the Université Catholique du Congo, the workshop titled “Species of Spaces: Rethinking the Socio-Political Stakes of the City Through Its Spaces and For Its People” brought together local authorities, researchers, students, residents, and many of the project’s interviewees.
The workshop opened with a presentation by the project’s Principal Investigator, Professor Stéphanie Perazzone, who revisited the project’s core objectives. She highlighted how the research examines “public spaces” in Kinshasa and Abidjan, exploring how these spaces are shaped by people’s lived experiences, imaginaries, and everyday practices, based on three years of collaborative research conducted by African and European scholars.
