The research project Unruly Spaces: Public Space, Society and Politics in Urban Africa, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and led by Dr. Stéphanie Perazzone, reaches its conclusion after three years of collaborative investigation across Geneva (Switzerland), Kinshasa (DR Congo), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire). Hosted at the Global Studies Institute, the project lies at the crossroads of political science, anthropology, and urban studies. It explores how the dynamics of control, negotiation, and production of “public space” are experienced, imagined, and enacted by residents, local authorities, and policymakers in two major African cities – Kinshasa and Abidjan.
The final conference, held on 16–17 December 2025 at the University of Geneva, will mark the culmination of this collective endeavour. Following two local restitution workshops in Kinshasa and Abidjan, this event will, for the first time, bring together the entire research team in person to share the project’s outcomes…
